Fast For Life Guidelines

Thank you for joining us on our Fast For Life to raise awareness of youth suicide on Saturday 10th September 2022. This fast day is supporting the work of Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland’s Crisis Prevention Programme.

When does the Fast start?

We recommend that you start your Fast at 12pm on 26th February until 12pm on 27th February This lets you have a big breakfast and an early lunch before you start your fast.

What is a fast?

You can do a 12 or 24 hour fast and get your friends, colleagues and family to sponsor you for the challenge. Remember to drink lots of fluids and have a cup of soup if you need it. If you feel dizzy, eat something immediately. If you’re under stress or if you’re tired, we recommend that you don’t fast until you feel better.

What are the age restrictions?

If you are between 14 and 16 you will need parental consent to participate in this event. If you're under 14 then it will not be possible to take part in this event.

Can I still pick my own fast day if 26th February doesn’t work?

Yes, you can. Some people like to pick a day that is important to them or commemorates an anniversary.

Are there any guidelines for fasting?

Yes! You shouldn't fast if you're diabetic, if you have kidney or liver problems, or if you're pregnant or breast feeding. Also, you shouldn't take part if you suffer from an eating disorder, asthma, tuberculosis or if you are under the care of a medical professional where you should seek their advice before fasting. If in doubt, always consult your doctor before taking part in a Fast. Please remember to drink lots of fluids and have a cup of soup if you need it. If you feel dizzy, eat something immediately. If you’re under stress or if you’re tired, we recommend that you don’t fast until you feel better.

While you are fasting you shouldn’t play sports or take part in demanding physical activities. If you need to take part in team activities or training on Fast Day then we suggest you defer your Fast until you have 24 hours without commitments. If, at any point during your fast, you become dizzy, light-headed or develop a headache, you should eat something. Don't worry about not completing the fast – your sponsors will understand.

Can I give up something other than food?

Absolutely. Social media, gaming, watching TV, eating or drinking sugary foods etc. are just a few of the things you can skip for a day. Try and pick something that would be as challenging for you personally to give up for 24 hours as food would be. Once people know you are making an effort, then they will be happy to support you.

How long can I take to fundraise?

We would ask that all funds raised be returned to us by 28th September 2022. Information on returning your sponsorship to us is available .

How much do I need to fundraise?

There is no set amount that you need to raise to take part in this event. We are very grateful for all funds raised, but we also want everyone taking part in this event to have fun and to not feel under pressure to reach unrealistic targets.

What happens to the money I raise for YSPI?

100% of funds raised by your Fast will go directly towards our youth suicide prevention programmes for schools. The charity has no salaried staff and all our services are provided by volunteers. All our Trustees are volunteers and receive no remuneration for their duties.
